Treadmill Stress Testing
Cardiac stress testing is to evaluate how well your heart works when it is under increased stress, usually during exercise or with medication that makes the heart work harder. It can detect problems such as blocked coronary arteries, poor blood flow, abnormal heart function, exercise-induced symptoms or arrhythmia.
3 Main Types of Stress Testing
Treadmill Exercise Stress-ECG
Your heart is placed under exercise stress, usually on a treadmill machine, while your heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG are monitored. Any changes, especially in the ECG morphology, indicates possible abnormalities in the heart.
Treadmill Exercise Stress Echocardiography
In addition to ECG, your heart is assessed using an Ultrasound machine before and immediately after the exercise stress. Comparison of the video images of the heart’s motion before and after exercise will give an indication of the adequacy of blood flow to the heart muscles.
Radionuclide Stress Testing
This test involves the use of radioactive tracer and a special camera to evaluate blood flow to the heart muscle. SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging and PET myocardial perfusion imaging are commonly used.
The test is able to identify reduced blood flow during stress, prior damage to heart muscle, viability of heart muscle and overall heart function.
All these tests are generally safe when supervised by trained medical staff. Please reach out to us to find out more.
